Live Life

In the same vein, "Work to Live," or everything should still be enjoyable during the time we spend here on Earth. This provides very diverse interpretations depending on the individual's circumstances. Generally speaking, it seems to me that more than half of Western civilization sees this as a life motto, after which one "must" live. And through the industrialized centuries, we see this motto increasingly realized, becoming more entrenched in "culture" with each generation. This is further reinforced by medical science, which manages to mitigate many ailments and diseases through a pill, an injection, or an (ethical) procedure.
There’s no negative word about medical science, an institution that knows how to turn human suffering into something positive as much as possible. That there is a price tag attached to that is evident.
Where a broken leg had a serious impact on a person's survival 150 years ago, think of being permanently disabled and, as a result, unable to work. Nowadays, it's an outpatient procedure with a maximum recovery time of six weeks, for which one is already insured in terms of income. After that, everything is back to normal, and you look forward to your ski vacation! And there’s a price tag for that too, that is evident!
The spectrum of diseases, ailments, discomforts, cosmetic, or plastic surgery is enormous. Within this spectrum, costs are reimbursable within the framework of insurance, whether or not they are covered. It’s a nice and socially beneficial aspect in the Netherlands/Europe to have opportunities available for those who are unfortunate. We don’t always have control over life, but is that also evident?
@Jan Rotmans recently discussed this in the meeting "Caring for Tomorrow," where he warned about the unsustainable growth of healthcare costs from various perspectives. Not just the aging population that will come over us like a wave in the coming decades, with all the associated costs. It’s not just the system that needs a thorough revision, but also a personal accountability that will evidently be necessary to have a certain level of care available.
Without having to compromise on the quality and quantity of life, a transition from merely treating symptoms to preventing causes is in order. Modern diseases and ailments like diabetes mellitus and obesity are increasingly diagnosed in many people, where these generally stem from how one interprets "Live Life." Therefore, some self-reflection here is evident.
