MoveGap

As noted in a recently published essay by Mirjam Stuij and Marloes van Gorp from the Mulier Institute (Essay - On (More) Movement), there are not only the well-known excuses for not moving but also socio-cultural circumstances that hinder regular physical activity.

Moving, especially walking, requires an investment of time to build a routine and habit. How abundant or scarce is your leisure time, or perhaps, how are your priorities? It would be naïve to solely blame priorities as the "culprit." For certain groups in society, leisure time is an exotic luxury, if they can even afford it. For other specific groups, there may be choices available or a particular prioritization at play. It can be helpful for these groups to say "No" to create space, as well as to evaluate whether the right priorities have been set. Overall, in both cases, it comes down to making decisions within context and on thoughtful grounds.

Another group, which is not further analyzed here but worth mentioning, consists of people who view ‘movement’ as a privilege reserved for the better-educated or higher-paid individuals, finding it ‘elitist’(!). This is an interesting subject for further research. ;-)

Returning to leisure time versus priorities: Are you able to say "No," and do you know how to prioritize effectively? If there is not too much of a restrictive environment consuming your (free) time, then walking, with its simplicity, can be a means to achieve relaxation and inner peace, and to reconnect with yourself. Choosing options and setting priorities become a result of balanced considerations during or after a walk. In other words, initiating a realistic movement plan through walking.

However, there is a catch: walking does not automatically equate to relaxation and (inner) peace, although that is the common perception of walking or movement in general.
